The Blurb:
No-one's ever called Dan a pushover. But then no-one's ever called him fast-track either. He likes driving slowly, playing Sudoku on his iphone, swapping one scruffy jumper for another. He's been with Clara for four years and he's been perfectly happy; but now she's gone, leaving nothing but a long letter filled with incriminations and a small, white, almost hairless dog, named Doggo. So Dan is single, a man without any kind of partner whether in work or love. He's just one reluctant dog owner. Find a new home for the hound, that's the plan; but first, he has to come to the office, just for a day...
The Review:
I had heard so much about this book and have been wanting to read it for a while now, so I was glad when I finally got the chance to sit down to read it. It's safe to say that I wasn't disappointed. Definitely a short but sweet story between a man and a dog.
Daniel's girlfriend Clara decides to just up and leave with nothing left behind other than a letter and a small dog named Doggo. This set up of the story made me unsure of the characters but as I got further into the story, the more I fell in love with Doggo and his ways (which is unusual for me as I am not a dog lover).
I also found myself sympathising with Edie and Daniel after they witnessed just how much of an impact Doggo has on people's lives as the story went on, even if he isn't the most pleasant if dogs to look at.
Daniel's grandad is another character I liked in this story and would have liked to have learnt more about how his relationship with Doggo had developed due to the circumstances. This is particularly because everyone deserves some happiness and light in their lives even when life is cruel and people lose the control of their life that they once had.
Even if you're a dog lover or not, this story will touch you more than you realise. This book has definitely made me realise that no one should be bullied or threatened by people around them and that in the most creative of ways you can let go of the negatives and outsmart those who want to drag you down. I have also learnt that what you truly love can play a big part in freeing yourself from the things that hold you down.
