The Blurb:
It should be the perfect holiday....
A seaside holiday at Shell Cottage in Devon has always been the perfect escape for the Tarrant family. Beach fun, barbecues and warm summer evenings with a cocktail or two - who could ask for more?
But this year, everything has changed. Following her husband's recent death, Olivia is struggling to pick up the pieces. Then she makes a shocking discovery that turns her world upside down.
As a busy mum and GP, Freya's used to having her hands full, but a bad day at work has put her career in jeopardy and now she's really feeling the pressure.
Harriet's looking forward to a break with her lovely husband Robert and teenage daughter Molly. But unknown to Harriet, Robert is hiding a secret - and so, for that matter, is Molly...
The Review:
A summery delight which will leave you wanting more once you have read the final page...
This is a book that I had been dying to get my hands on as soon as I knew about it because it sounded like one of those perfect books to be enjoyed by the sea and it did not disappoint one bit.
"Sun. Sea. Sand. Secrets." This book really did have it all. It captured the scenery of Devon in a captivating and bewitching way that really made me feel as though I was right there in the midst of it all. The secrets that were unearthed made me respond to the characters in a different light and occasionally made me curse under my breath at the deceit that had been kept under wraps for such a long time.
Lucy has created characters with whom people can relate to from Freya, who crumbles beneath the pressure of having to be strong for everyone around her, to Olivia who finds a new lease of life in the most unexpected of ways. Even characters like Victor, who believes he always has to be the hero and is so focused on himself that he becomes oblivious to what is going on in his own home, and Robert who doesn't feel like he's good enough so he creates this fantasy life for himself, make you realise just how much various things can affect people's lives and confidence.
Summer at Shell Cottage is a book that will stay with me for a very long time and I very highly recommend it as a must read this summer. Definitely an enchanting book which will have you wishing that you were by the coast this summer, having a life, enjoying the sunshine and maybe having a few sneaky cocktails and barbecues.
